Does a free AI resume review actually work? What to expect and what to check
The short answer
A free AI resume review is useful for some purposes and not for others. It can read your resume fast, quote your own lines back to you, and flag the ones that are vague, generic, inconsistent or risky. It cannot know whether a line is true. Only you can. A good review ends with questions for you to answer, not a rewritten resume full of claims nobody confirmed. Use it as a second reader, then decide what stays.

What an AI review can do
Reading is the strength. In general, an AI can go through a two-page resume in seconds and do the following well. The PM Career Desk review is narrower, and is described further down:
- Quote and flag lines. "Responsible for vendor management" is quoted back to you with a note: this says what you owned, not what changed.
- Spot inconsistencies. A team of 8 in one role and a team of 12 in a summary. A title that differs from your LinkedIn. Dates that overlap.
- Notice missing scope. No budget, team size, duration or setting in a line that needs one.
- Notice generic language. Phrases that could sit on anyone's resume: "results-driven," "cross-functional collaboration," "improved efficiency."
- Suggest wording options. Three ways to phrase a bullet, so you can choose the one that fits what happened.
- Ask questions. "Where does this number come from?" is the most useful thing a reviewer can say.
None of that requires the AI to know anything about your actual career. It works from the page.
What an AI review cannot do
It cannot know whether a line is true. The AI sees "reduced release time by 30%." It has no way to know whether you measured that, whether the team did, or whether it was 12% and someone rounded it up in 2021. It can say "this number has no source on the page." It cannot say "this number is wrong." Nobody but you can.
It cannot know your record. The plan, the status reports, the ledger and the sign-off email are not in the file you uploaded. A review can mark a line as unsupported. That means nothing on the page supports it. It does not mean the line is false.
It cannot know the employer. What one hiring manager wants to see, another ignores. An AI can describe common patterns. It cannot tell you what a specific team will decide.
It cannot promise an outcome. No review, human or AI, controls who gets an interview or an offer. Treat any tool that says otherwise with caution.
It can be confidently wrong. Language models sometimes produce fluent feedback that misreads the line or invents context. Read each comment against your own knowledge before you act on it.
Why the gap between quoted and true matters
Some employers are wary of generic AI-written resumes. In a March 2025 survey by Resume Now, a company that sells resume tools, 62% of the 925 HR professionals surveyed said generic AI-written resumes often lead to rejection. It is a vendor survey, so read it as one signal, not a measurement of the whole market. Still, the point is worth taking: text that sounds polished but has nothing specific behind it is a risk.
The fix is not to avoid AI. The fix is to make sure every claim that leaves your hands is one you can defend. That is why PM Career Desk asks you to attest. Reed can quote a line and ask about it. Only you can say "yes, this is right and here is where it comes from," and only then does the line become part of your record.
Seven things to check in any AI resume review
These apply to any tool, including ours.
- Does it quote your actual lines? Feedback that could apply to any resume is filler. Good feedback points to a specific bullet.
- Does it separate "unsupported" from "wrong"? It should say what the page lacks, not declare your facts false.
- Does it ask you questions? A review that only rewrites is guessing at your facts.
- Did it add anything you did not say? Compare rewrites with your original. New numbers, new scope or a stronger verb are all claims you would have to defend.
- Are the suggestions specific to your role? Advice for project, program and product managers differs from advice for sales or design.
- Does it make promises? Promises of interviews, offers or "beating the system" mean stop reading.
- Do you know what happens to your file? Before you upload, find out how long the tool keeps your resume and whether it uses it for anything else. Remove details you do not need to share, such as a home address.
How PM Career Desk's free review works
You upload your resume. In minutes, Reed, an AI career analyst, reads it and returns:
- your own lines, quoted;
- a mark on each line that looks unsupported, generic or risky, with a short reason;
- three questions for you to answer.
Reed is an AI, and the review is written by Reed. The review gives feedback on your document. It does not promise interviews or offers, and it does not change your resume. If you want to go further, your answers can become the start of a record of career facts that you attest. Each line in that record is marked as backed by a document or stated by you. Nothing is added that you did not confirm.

Illustrative example
Illustrative, not a real client.
Line in the resume: "Delivered a $2M program on time and under budget, improving customer satisfaction by 25%."
What an AI review can say:
- "$2M, on time and under budget" has no scope beside it: how many workstreams, how many people, what was delivered?
- "improving customer satisfaction by 25%" has no source on the page. What was measured, over what period, and by whom?
- "Delivered" does not say what your role was.
What it cannot say: whether the $2M was the budget you controlled, whether 25% came from a survey or a guess, or whether the program was late by a week and nobody counted it.
Questions it asks you:
- Which budget did you control, and where is that figure recorded?
- Where does 25% come from?
- Did you lead the program or a workstream?
What you might answer: "I ran the finance workstream inside a $2M program. The satisfaction figure came from the sponsor's quarterly survey, which I still have. I cannot find a source for on time and under budget, so I will remove it."
That last answer is the point. The review did not find the truth. It found the line that needed a check, and you did the rest. The rewritten line is smaller and every part of it traces to your own record.

When a free AI review is enough, and when it is not
Enough: you want a quick second read before you send a resume, or you want to find weak or unsupported lines before you spend money on anything.
Not enough: you need a judgment about a specific market or employer, legal, immigration or tax advice, or a person to talk through a career change. Talk to a human then. PM Career Desk offers an optional practitioner session for talking through a career change. For legal, immigration or tax questions, ask a qualified professional.

FAQ
Is a free AI resume review really free? The PM Career Desk review is free and needs no card. Other tools vary, so check what you get before you upload, for example whether you see a full result or only a partial one.
Can I trust what an AI resume review tells me? Trust it to read carefully and to point at lines. Do not trust it to know your facts. Treat each comment as a question, and read it against your own record. If a suggestion adds a number or a claim you did not supply, discard it.
Will an AI resume review get me interviews? No review can promise that. Hiring decisions belong to employers. A review can help you send a clearer document with claims you can defend, which is the part you control.
