IT project manager resume: systems, go-lives and the decisions that were yours

The short answer

An IT project manager resume should say, in its top third, which kinds of systems you deliver, at what size, and for whom. Each role then needs a scope line and bullets that show a decision or a change: a go-live stated with the plan it was measured against, a cutover risk you acted on, a team size with the reporting lines, a result with a starting point and a record. Duties and tools say what the job was; the reader looks for what went live and what you decided.

How the free review reads an IT project manager resume

The free review has no separate IT project manager checks. It decides the role from your titles, headline and lines:

  • IT project manager in a title reads as a project manager resume, with the project manager checks every line here was run through. Those checks are a draft that working practitioners still review.
  • Technical project manager reads as a technical program manager resume: see the technical program manager resume guide.
  • Lines that are mostly IT operations words, such as "IT operations", "IT service" and "IT infrastructure", can tip the reading to an IT manager resume even under an IT project manager title. If you run services, the IT manager resume guide fits better. If you deliver projects, describe the projects.

What a hiring manager looks for

An IT project manager is read by the systems involved, the size of the work and what happened at go-live:

  • Kind of work and scale up front, and a scope line for every role. ERP, infrastructure, cloud or application projects; budget, team, sites, users and reporting line.
  • Delivery stated with its condition. A go-live against the approved or re-approved plan, not an unconditional "on time and on budget".
  • Stakeholders and risks shown by a decision. A business owner who agreed a cutover window; a cutover or vendor risk you raised, and what was decided.
  • Team size with the reporting lines. Direct reports, and vendor staff through their leads.
  • Method and tools inside the work. How the plan ran, not a list of names.

The top third

A headline names the role, the kind of systems and the size. A summary adds the business and the reporting line.

Headline pattern: IT Project Manager | ERP and infrastructure | budgets up to $4M

WeakWhyStronger (illustrative)
Results-driven IT project manager with a proven track record of delivering complex technology projects. No systems, no size, no business. Reed marks "proven track record" as a phrase that fits any resume, and the summary states no size of work.IT project manager for ERP and infrastructure projects in a 2,000-person insurer: budgets up to $4M, teams of up to 25 including two vendors, reporting to the CIO.

Experience: a scope line, then bullets

Under each role, add one line that sizes the work:

Scope: ERP and infrastructure projects for 2,000 users at 6 sites, budgets up to $4M, teams of up to 25 including two vendors, reporting to the CIO.

Users, sites and budgets describe the size of the work, so they need no starting point. A claimed change in tickets, downtime or cost does. The full review flags a role that gives no size of the work. Then make each bullet a go-live against the plan, a risk or change put to a decision, or a result with a starting point and a record.

Lines Reed flags on an IT project manager resume, before and after

Illustrative, not a real client. Figures are invented to show the pattern. Each line on the left is a kind Reed flags when it reads an IT project manager resume, with the finding it gives; the right column is one way to answer the question it asks. The free review shows the 5 lines to fix first, the full review every line.

Line as writtenWhat the review saysStronger line
Delivered the ERP upgrade on time and on budget. An unconditional claim of on time and on budget is the kind a reference call can contradict.Took the ERP upgrade live on the date the steering committee re-approved in March, after one re-plan for a data issue; $120K under the approved budget, per the finance report.
Managed stakeholders across IT and the business.Stakeholder work is named but no decision or outcome is shown.Brought finance and operations to one approved cutover window after two rounds of conflicting requests; the CFO signed the go-live plan.
Maintained the RAID log and the cutover plan for the migration.A log or plan is named as a duty; no risk or change to the plan is shown.Raised the risk that one cutover weekend was not enough after a trial load failed; the sponsor approved a second weekend and a rollback point before go-live.
Led a team of 25 developers, testers and vendor staff.A team size is given without saying who reported to you.Led 6 direct reports and coordinated 19 vendor staff through two vendor leads across build and test.
Used Agile and Waterfall to deliver infrastructure projects.A method is named as used; the effect on the work is not shown.Ran fixed-date cutover milestones for the business and two-week sprints for the build team, so the sprint scope could move while the go-live date held.
Reduced incident tickets by 40% after the go-live.This figure has no starting point.Cut service desk tickets for the new system from 900 to 540 a month within a quarter of go-live, per the ServiceNow report.
Responsible for the data center migration. This line names a duty and no result.Moved 140 servers from the old data center to the cloud in 7 waves over 9 months, with one wave rolled back and rerun the next weekend, per the migration tracker.
Jira, ServiceNow, MS Project, Azure DevOps, Confluence, SQL.A list of tools with no example of use.Tracked every cutover task in Jira and posted the burn-down to the steering committee each week of the migration.

The full review also says when no stakeholder or sponsor appears anywhere in the experience section, or no risk, decision or escalation.

What the rules miss. "Managed projects from initiation to closure." gets "This is a description of the job, not of your work." The same line with one more word, "Managed IT projects from initiation to closure.", gets no finding today. No finding is not praise: read every duty line the way a hiring manager would.

IT Project Manager | ERP and infrastructure | budgets up to $4M

IT Project Manager, Regional Insurer | 2021 to 2025 Scope: ERP and infrastructure projects for 2,000 users at 6 sites, budgets up to $4M, teams of up to 25 including two vendors, reporting to the CIO.

Annotations.

  • Bullet 1 states the go-live against the re-approved plan and says there was a re-plan.
  • Bullets 2 and 3 show a risk and a stakeholder by the decision someone made.
  • Bullet 4 separates direct reports from vendor staff: 6 plus 19 is the team of 25 from the weak line.
  • Bullet 5 gives the size of the move and the record behind it.

Before you send: four checks

  • Does the top third say which systems you deliver, at what size, and for whom, and does every role have a scope line?
  • Is every go-live stated against the approved or re-approved plan?
  • Does every team size say who reported to you, and every result figure have a starting point and a record?
  • Across your last two roles, is there a risk you acted on and a stakeholder shown by a decision?

Prepare for the interview too

An interviewer can ask about any line above. Project manager interview questions cover scope, risk, recovery and stakeholders. Two answer guides go deeper on questions from the project manager track of Interview Coach: how to answer the scope change question and how to answer the project risk question. Interview Coach in Claude turns the lines of your own resume into questions to prepare.

Questions

Should an IT project manager resume list technical skills?

Name the systems your projects touched inside the bullets where you used them. A separate list of tool names with no example of use is flagged by the review. Keep a short skills line only for what a posting asks for and you can talk through.

Does the free review have IT project manager checks?

Not separate ones. When your title says IT project manager, it reads the resume with its project manager checks: duties with no result, unconditional on time and on budget claims, figures with no starting point, team sizes with no reporting line, logs named as duties. A technical project manager title is read with the technical program manager checks. Those checks are a draft that working practitioners still review.

Does Reed know whether my resume is true?

No. Reed is an AI and cannot know whether a line is true. It quotes your line back and asks where the record is, such as a steering minute, a change request or a service desk report. You decide what stays and what changes. Nothing is added to your resume that you did not confirm.
